Joseph asks…Significant digits and average daily temperature: 70 high, 60 low, mean = 65. 70 high, 59 low, mean = 64.5?One part of me says that the average can't have more significant digits than the measurement - then how can the govt. come up with a statistic that each household has on average 2.3 kids or something like that when the actual number of kids measured in every household is always a whole number? What am I missing?
This becomes an issue it seems when reporting temperate trends
